The award was created by the Mangeshkar Family Trust in honor of Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away on February 6, 2022 from multiple organ failure. The Dirty Picture and Kahaani star Balan expressed her gratitude for being able to accept the award while wearing a saree that Lata Mangeshkar gave to her many years ago.
“I was in awe seeing Lata Mangeshkar perform at an event as a new actress. Later, when I finally worked up the nerve to call her, I was blessed in disguise when she sent me a saree and I got to hear her wonderful voice. I’ve always wanted to flaunt this saree, but today had to be the day. I’m wearing this saree as I accept this important prize. I am trembling as I speak, but it is definitely a blessing for me.
Every year, a person who has made a revolutionary contribution to the country, its people, and society is granted the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award. Its initial recipient was Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Veteran ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, the Gauri Theaters of the Prashant Damle Fan Foundation for the Best Play of the Year (Niyam and Ati Lagoo), and the Sadhguru Seva Sangh Trust for Outstanding Social Service were also recognized at the occasion. Granthali Prakashan received the Vagvilasini Prize for literary achievement, while actor-director Prasad Oak received a special award for his work in theater and film.
Deenanath Mangeshkar, the legendary actor and musician who is also the father of the Mangeshkar siblings, is remembered on April 24.
