A Franchise Returns with a Fresh Twist

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2003 film Freaky Friday is finally here. Titled Freakier Friday, the new film is set to be released theatrically on August 8, 2025. The film, which stars the original cast members Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, had its premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on July 22, 2025, to rave reviews. The sequel picks up 22 years after the original, with Anna Coleman (Lohan) now a mother of a 14-year-old daughter, Harper, and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, Lily. The film follows the same body-swapping concept as the original, but this time with a twist: Tess (Curtis) and Anna will not be swapping bodies with each other. Instead, they will be switching with the two teenage girls, creating double the chaos and hilarity.

The film’s return has been a long time coming. Jamie Lee Curtis first sparked rumors of a sequel in 2022 and has since been a major driving force behind the project. She has been on a number of talk shows, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and This Morning, to promote the film, and she has spoken about her excitement to return to her role. The film’s trailer, which was released in July 2025, was a major hit with fans and showcased the film’s humor and heartwarming moments.

A Nostalgic Reunion and a New Generation

The new film is not just a reunion for Curtis and Lohan, but for a number of other cast members from the original as well. Mark Harmon will reprise his role as Ryan, Tess’s husband, and Chad Michael Murray will return as Jake, Anna’s love interest. Other returning cast members include Christina Vidal, Haley Hudson, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao, all of whom will be reprising their roles from the original. The reunion of the cast has been a major talking point for fans of the original film, with many expressing their excitement to see their favorite characters back on the big screen.

The film also introduces a new generation of characters, with Julia Butters playing Harper, Anna’s daughter, and Sophia Hammons playing Lily, Anna’s soon-to-be stepdaughter. The film’s plot, which focuses on the challenges of a blended family, is a modern take on the original’s themes of empathy and understanding. The film also features the return of the fictional band Pink Slip, with Lohan once again performing a new version of the song “Take Me Away.” The film is a love letter to the original, and it is a clear sign that the Freaky Friday franchise is back and better than ever.
