Rohit Sharma will captain the Mumbai Indians against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening game of IPL 2023 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, according to MI head coach Mark Boucher. After skipping the preseason captain’s meeting in Ahmedabad on Friday due to illness, there were reports that the MI skipper might not make it to the match on Sunday. However, Boucher dispelled any concerns about Rohit’s condition and said that the Indian captain is well prepared for MI in their crucial encounter against RCB.

“Rohit is healthy, yes. He has been working out for the past two days and is well prepared. I believe he wasn’t feeling well that morning, so we advised him to stay at home out of an abundance of caution “said on Saturday during the news conference prior to the game.

He stated: “Numerous photo shootings are required of the boys. We reasoned that it would be better because they don’t get much alone time.”

British quick Jofra Archer, who is himself returning from a protracted injury layoff, will be in charge of MI’s speed attack in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. “Jofra is doing well; he is completely prepared for tomorrow. Since it was an optional training session, he didn’t train today. Tomorrow, he thought he would be prepared to put on the spikes. Since he has been with us for a while, we are quite happy with his improvement. He’ll perform tomorrow.”

The 10-place finish in last year’s campaign by the five-time champions was poor, but Boucher does not want to dwell on it because he was not in command at the time.

As I wasn’t present last year, I can’t really remark. But we have discussed it; the club has some new talent, some fresh energy, and some players who did exceptionally well in the previous IPL. We didn’t have a great season last year, but anything can change overnight, and right now, things are looking up.

“If we get off to a good start, we won’t panic. The IPL season is won in May, not April or March. I hope we can get off to a good start and gain some momentum.
