Loretta Swit, the Emmy-winning actress best known for her role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the acclaimed television series MASH*, has died at the age of 87. Swit passed away from natural causes at her home in New York City on May 30, 2025, as confirmed by her publicist, Harlan Boll.
Born on November 4, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey, Swit began her acting career in the late 1960s, with guest roles on popular television series such as Hawaii Five-O, Gunsmoke, and Mission: Impossible. Her breakout role came in 1972 when she was cast as Major Houlihan in MASH*, a role she would portray for all 11 seasons of the show until its finale in 1983. Swit appeared in all but 11 of the show’s 256 episodes, earning ten Emmy nominations and winning twice for her performance.
Initially portrayed as a one-dimensional character, Swit’s influence helped transform Major Houlihan into a complex and empowered figure, reflecting the evolving role of women in society and the military. Her portrayal resonated with audiences and inspired many women to pursue careers in nursing and the armed forces.
Beyond her acting career, Swit was a passionate animal rights activist. In 2016, she founded the SwitHeart Animal Alliance, dedicated to ending animal suffering and cruelty. She was also a published author, with works including A Needlepoint Scrapbook and SwitHeart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit.Â
Swit was married to actor Dennis Holahan from 1983 until their divorce in 1995. She is survived by her extended family and countless fans who admired her talent and advocacy.Â
