The Help is set in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s during the civil rights movement and is based on Kathryn Stockett’s book of the same name. It focuses on the struggles African American maids face on a daily basis after spending their entire lives working for white households. One particularly noteworthy scene features Spencer’s Minny baking her well-known pie for her ex-boss (Bryce Dallas Howard), but in retaliation for her dismissal, she puts her own feces to it.
Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, and Viola Davis also starred in the movie. Spencer’s portrayal of Minny earned her an Oscar for best support actress.
