Mindy Kaling’s 20-Somethings Hulu Comedy Gets Series Order As She Re-Ups Warner Bros. TV Group Overall Deal

Warner Bros.’ half-hour, single-camera comedy, Not Suitable For Work, has been given a series order by Hulu. TV. The series’ creator and executive producer, Mindy Kaling, has also extended her significant overall contract with Warner Bros. Deadline can exclusively reveal TV Group.

Following a bidding process with a script-to-series commitment, the project, fka Murray Hill, was taken out at the beginning of 2024 and attracted interest from several purchasers before ending up at Hulu. The showrunner and executive producer is Charlie Grandy (Velma), a longstanding colleague of Kaling.

Six years ago, as she was leaving her old home at NBCUniversal, Kaling and her Kaling International banner signed with WBTV in a very competitive situation. Deadline claimed at the time that the WBTVG deal was for six years and cost roughly $8.5 million annually, though terms were not disclosed at the time.

Months before Kaling’s current contract was set to expire in May 2025, WBTVG approached her about a renewal, as studios do with their best talent that they wish to retain. Last month, they came to an agreement on a multi-year renewal, according to sources.
Studios continue to place a premium on writer-producers like Kaling who have demonstrated their ability to create and manage many series simultaneously, even though the market is far from the 2019 deal bubble, which saw costs soar. She will keep creating and producing shows just for WBTV in the future.

Since relocating to the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned company, Kaling has co-created and executive produced a number of comedy shows, including Not Suitable For Work, Running Point, which stars Kate Hudson and will debut on Netflix next week, and The Sex Lives Of College Girls on Max. She is now executive producing the multi-camera sitcom Zarna, which received a rare pilot order at CBS, and she previously executive produced the studio’s animated comedy series for Max Velma.

After high school, which Kaling documented in her popular Netflix/Universal TV comedy Never Have I Ever, and college, which serves as the backdrop for The Sex Lives of College Girls, Not Suitable For Work examines the next phase of young people’s lives. It revolves around five work-obsessed twentysomethings in Murray Hill, Manhattan’s most glitzy neighborhood, who are aiming for both professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness.

Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment serves as executive producer with Kaling and Grandy, who also has an overall agreement at WBTV.

Following the romantic comedy series Four Weddings and Funeral and The Mindy Project, which moved to the streaming service after three seasons on Fox, this is Kaling’s third series for Hulu. Kaling is represented by CAA, 3 Arts, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Today, Kaling will get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Not Suitable For Work is the latest addition to Hulu Originals’ lineup of live-action comedy, which also includes the returning series Only Murders in the Building and two new ones: multi-camera sitcom Mid-Century Modern and Glen Powell’s Chad Powers.
