This weekend marks the release of Warner Bros.’ costly auteur sci-fi film Mickey 17, directed by Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho and expected to gross approximately $45 million worldwide.
Before P&A, the Robert Pattinson film had a net production cost of $118 million after UK tax credits. For Mickey 17 to break even, which is estimated to cost between $240M and $300M, turnstiles must be operating at full capacity.

The majority of UK critics agree with the early social and critics’ assessments in France, which are good and comparable to those of Alien: Romulus and Tenet, for instance. It could be interesting to observe China. Even while the local blockbuster is starting to level off, Ne Zha 2 (at about $1.97 billion) still has a significant lead and will continue to do so. The favorable reception to Mickey 17’s Sunday premiere showing in Beijing and seven other cities was covered by state media on Monday. Filmgoers “praised the film’s amusing, sincere and topical allegory, along with the cast’s performances.” The marketing strategy, according to China.org, “playfully appeals to Chinese audiences, especially younger viewers, by framing the film as a tale of workers managing demanding bosses.”
Over the past few months, the Mickey 17 crew has been on the road, attending events such as Pattinson and Bong’s January visit in Seoul, the London premiere in early February, the Berlin Film Festival gala showing, and a Paris premiere. A recent event in Korea featured Bong, Ackie, Ruffalo, and Yeun.
We will observe Mickey 17’s behavior. An auteur film usually experiences a surge in attendance during its first weekend, i.e. Martin Scorsese, Nolan, and Quentin Tarantino. Nobody anticipated Focus Features’ Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers, to become the distributor’s second-highest-earning film ever in the United States, grossing $95.6 million and $21.6 million over three days. Due in part to audiences discovering Eggers’ The Northman in its home window, the director saw Nosferatu become his highest-grossing film to date.
This weekend, Bill Guttentag’s Rule Breakers, starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge from Fleabag, will also be released widely in the United States and Canada via Angels Studios. The picture’s synopsis: A visionary woman inspires resistance and hope in a country where educating females is seen as rebellion. Their bravery sparks a movement that has the potential to permanently change their country.
With a fresh Rotten Tomatoes reviewer score of 77%, Rule Breakers, which is now showing in 2,044 theaters, is predicted to place in the low single digits.
