A Look at the New Film’s Performance
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s highly anticipated reboot, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has had a strong opening at the global box office. The film, which was released on July 25, opened with a global total of $218 million. This included $118 million from North American theaters, making it the fourth-biggest global opening of 2025. The film, which stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, is seen as a key project for the MCU. After its first week, the film’s global gross has now exceeded $500 million. Despite a promising opening, box office analysts are projecting a significant drop in its second weekend, which has become a common trend for recent MCU films. Projections suggest a decline of up to 60%, with Disney and Marvel Studios expecting the film to earn between $45 million and $52 million in its second weekend. With a reported production budget of $200 million, the film will need to continue to perform well in the coming weeks to be considered a major financial success.
The History of the Fantastic Four at the Box Office
The new film’s box office performance stands in stark contrast to the previous film adaptations of the beloved superhero team. The previous three theatrically released films had a mixed track record.
- Fantastic Four (2005): The first film, starring Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba, was considered a modest financial success. On a production budget of $87.5-100 million, it grossed over $333 million worldwide.
- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007): The sequel, with a higher production budget of $120-130 million, saw a slight decline in performance, grossing over $301 million worldwide.
- Fantastic Four (2015): The last attempt at a reboot, directed by Josh Trank, was a critical and commercial failure. With a budget of $120-155 million, it only managed to gross around $167 million worldwide, resulting in significant financial losses for the studio.
The unreleased 1994 film, which had a budget of just $1 million, was made solely to retain the film rights and was never shown in theaters. The new MCU version, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has already surpassed the total domestic gross of the 2005 film, and with its global performance, it is poised to be the most financially successful film in the franchise’s history.
