The legendary Ravi Shastri remarked that Prithvi Shaw has “a little bit of Virender Sehwag, Brain Lara, and Sachin Tendulkar” when he made his India debut in 2018 and struck a century in that Test match. In a disappointing turn of events, five years later Shaw is still having trouble rejoining the Indian team. A displeased Sehwag bemoaned Shaw’s frequent mistakes in making unfavorable comparisons with Shubman Gill, who played Under-19 cricket with him, despite the fact that Shaw was the explosive batsman that he was.

In a discussion with Cricbuzz, Sehwag lashed out at Shaw’s firing, saying that Shaw had received too many similar dismissals and yet didn’t want to learn from them. Shaw failed to draw off the short delivery from Mohammed Shami that was put outside off, sending it straight to the fielder at mid-on.
Sehwag also out that Gill, a member of the same India U-19 team as Shaw, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who amassed more than 600 runs during the IPL 2021 season, served as examples of Shaw’s competitors who are far ahead of him in the standings.
He responded, “He has been out playing such shots several times, but he should also learn from his mistakes, shouldn’t he?” Shaw is still having difficulty in the IPL compared to Shubman Gill, who they both played U-19 cricket with and is now a Test, ODI, and T20 player for India. He needs to score runs and make the most of this IPL opportunity. In a single IPL season, 600 runs were scored by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Moreover, Shubman Gill scored fast runs. Shaw must therefore continue to score consistently in the IPL.
In the IPL 2023, this was Shaw’s second straight unsuccessful batting attempt. In the homecoming game for Delhi on Tuesday, he went 5 for 7, but previous week, he could only muster 12 runs off 9 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants.
Shaw was recently selected for the T20I series against New Zealand in January but did not play because the management preferred Gill as an opener. Shaw is not a factor in the ODI format.
