Although Kate Hudson does not advocate for a tattoo-free home, she does set limits on the type of tattoos her children can receive.
The 45-year-old actress and singer talked candidly about some of her oldest son Ryder Robinson’s tattoos in the March 13 episode of The Martha Stewart Podcast. She said that he had “quite a few,” but one in particular caused her to “draw a line as a mother.”
According to Hudson, “Ryder got a tattoo that I hate so much,” she told Martha Stewart. “Nope, that is coming off,” I said.
Which “terrible” tattoo is it? A “scribble” found on the calf of her 21-year-old son. Hudson admitted, “It is gotta go and he is going to get it taken off,”
Ryder’s collection of mom-approved tattoos includes one that pays homage to his three half-siblings. The initials of his siblings, Cheyenne Genevieve (whose father is Hudson’s ex-husband Chris Robinson), Rani Rose Hudson Fujikawa (whose father is Hudson’s current fiancé Danny Fujikawa), and brother Bingham Hawn Bellamy (whom Hudson shares with ex-fiance Matt Bellamy), are represented by the “CBR” ink on his arm.
The Running Point actress is generally unconcerned about her children getting tattoos (when they are old enough, of course), but there are a few other rules she does not compromise on. She added, “I just want you to help me. I do not want face tattoos, please. Just stay away from the neck, you know, neck down.”
In addition, Hudson has a tattoo on her foot that is a tiny star. “I was a wimp. It should have been much bigger, but after I received one star, I said, ‘I am done.'”
She also disclosed that the small artwork makes her think of her mother, Goldenie Hawn. “When we put our feet together, they look exactly the same because we have the same size foot and they look exactly the same. It is so adorable that she got a heart for her 60th birthday, and it is on her foot exactly where my star is.”
Hudson has been open about her family life over the years, posting numerous photos of herself and her children on social media. The Oscar nominee has discussed Ryder’s potential to become an actor and musician like his parents.
In addition to being a guitarist in his band Codependence, he is also “deeply funny.”
In a 2021 interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Hudson stated, “I would say he is probably the funniest in our family. So, this is like every day for me. Nobody makes me laugh like Ryder, and he just constantly makes fun of me.”
Hudson explained to PEOPLE last year how her bond with Ryder differs from her relationships with her younger children. She said that she has “never had an adult life” without her oldest child. “I think I was young when I had him, so it is a different relationship than with my other kids. So he is seen me through all of my good times, my bad times, this boyfriend, not that boyfriend,” she explained.
