Admit it, you assume all actors are rich.

That being in movies or on TV means they’re living in mansions, plural, and flying on private jets. Or, at the very least, they are not worrying about money.

And, to be fair, there are some extraordinarily wealthy celebrities out there, whether because they get paid $20 million to be in a movie or are stars of TV’s biggest sitcom. Or, instead of relying solely on their day jobs, perhaps they have invested well or sold a liquor company for a billion dollars.

More often than not, though, artists—even the ubiquitous ones—are just trying to make a living and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

“It’s like three grand an episode,” Pete Davidson told New York of his early Saturday Night Live salary, when former cast members were asked how they spent their first paychecks. “So I think I got dinner.” Jason Sudeikis could sympathize, noting, “I think New York rent was probably the biggest purchase I made after writing on SNL the first year.”

As two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett said on Watch What Happens Live last year, women in Hollywood “don’t get paid as much as you think they do.” Not even when they play elves in a $3 billion fantasy franchise.

In any case, it’s always fascinating to hear how much actors earn, particularly when the assumption is wildly off base. Which, especially when it comes to a finished product that looks glamorous, it so often is.

So, we have compiled juicy salary talk straight from the stars themselves. If you’d like to hear about all kinds of paychecks—the wildly big, surprisingly small and everywhere in between—keep reading:
