A Pioneer’s Enduring Legacy
Mark Kerr, the retired mixed martial arts fighter and two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion, has been a major topic of conversation in 2025. In a highly anticipated announcement on June 8, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) revealed that Kerr would be inducted into the 2025 Class of the UFC Hall of Fame as a pioneer of the sport. The induction ceremony took place on June 26 at T-Mobile Arena during the 13th Annual UFC International Fight Week. At the event, he was formally inducted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is set to portray Kerr in an upcoming biopic. Kerr, a veteran of 27 fights, was a dominant force in the sport’s early days and was instrumental in shaping what modern MMA would become.
The induction is a major milestone for Kerr, who has had a long and challenging career. Known for his punishing fighting style, which earned him the nickname “The Smashing Machine,” he was a formidable opponent in both the UFC and PRIDE Fighting Championships. His career, however, was also marked by his personal struggles with addiction to painkillers, a battle that was documented in the critically acclaimed 2002 HBO documentary, also titled The Smashing Machine. His induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his triumphs and his enduring legacy as a pioneer of the sport.
A Biopic and a New Look at a Champion
The life of Mark Kerr will be brought to the big screen in a new biopic titled The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the lead. The film, which also features Emily Blunt as Kerr’s then-wife Dawn Staples, is scheduled to have its world premiere in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2025. It will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival before its general theatrical release on October 3. The film, directed by Benny Safdie, is expected to offer a deep and honest look at Kerr’s career and his struggles with addiction.
Johnson has been open about the challenges of portraying Kerr. He has spoken about his deep respect for the MMA community and for those who have struggled with addiction. He has described the role as a “love letter” to his friends and family who have battled with mental health and substance abuse issues. The movie, which has a budget of $40 million, is an A24 production and has generated significant buzz in Hollywood. With the film’s release and his induction into the Hall of Fame, Mark Kerr’s story will reach a new and wider audience.
