Unique:The fantasy film devil vs reich (East freaks out), which won eight awards at the Venice Film Festival in 2021, including the Graffa d’Oro for Best Picture, and six David di Donatello Awards from the Academy of Italian Cinema the following year, is acquired by VMI Releasing for North America. They call me g, Gabriele Menetti’s second film, will debut in theaters and on digital platforms on April 28.
The 1943 Rome-set movie opens at a traveling circus run by an aging magician named Israel (Giorgio Tirabassi). The cast, who serve as his adoptive family, is an odd group. They include Matilde (Aurora Giovinazzo), a young beauty with electrical charges; Censio (Pietro Castellito), an albino with insect-controlling abilities; little Mario (Giancarlo Martini), endowed with magnetic abilities; and Fulvio (Claudio Santamaria), a powerful man with hair covering his entire body.
Israel realized that his only chance of surviving as the Nazis took over his city was to travel to America, where he could continue his work. Unfortunately, he disappears, leaving the brutal “Satans” to fend for themselves. As a result, they band together to look for their missing companion. Franz (Franz Rogowski), a crazy, ether-dependent, six-fingered Nazi who owns the adjacent Circus Berlin and entertains his high rank with grand piano recitals, comes into their path along the way. The war’s end, Hitler’s suicide, and technologies from the twenty-first century are all depicted in his future visions, and he is convinced that a brilliant circus troupe will help him secure triumph for the Reich. Will the “Freak” locate Israel first and elude the Nazis, or will their abilities be used in a way that could alter their futures? and the course of history as a whole forever?
The film’s screenplay was written by Manetti and Nicola Guaglianone, and it was co-produced in Italy by Goon Films, Lucky Red with Rai Cinema, and Gapfinders.
