Following the discovery of her racially offensive X/Twitter remarks, Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is not anticipated to attend the BAFTA Film Awards.
The transgender Spanish performer Gascón is nominated for Leading Actress at the BAFTAs, but she is not listed as a guest for the evening, indicating that she will not be attending the ceremony on Sunday. She received the first BAFTA Film Award nomination for an openly transgender actress.
Gascón has already skipped the Goya, PGA, and Critics Choice Awards, but the BAFTAs are perhaps the most well-known event she will miss. Requests for comment were not answered by Netflix or her representatives.
Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, who are both vying for Supporting Actress, are among the other Emilia Pérez nominees who are anticipated to attend the Royal Festival Hall event in London. Gomez and Saldaña will also award a prize.
Gascón essentially left the awards trail last week, stating in a statement that she preferred to let the work speak for itself. “I truly apologize to everyone who has been injured along the process,” Gascón wrote, adding that she hopes “my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is.”
It comes after journalist Sarah Hagi discovered Gascón’s contentious social media remarks last month, blowing up a campaign where the actress was supposed to win a transgender award for her portrayal of a transitioning drug boss in Emilia Pérez.
Following victories for Minari and Judas and the Black Messiah, Gascón stated that Islam was a “hotbed of infection for humanity,” called George Floyd a “drug addict swindler,” and called the 2021 Oscars a “ugly” “Afro-Korean carnival.”
In other places, Gascón frequently used a Spanish phrase that means “faggot” in English and reflected that she does not “understand so much about the world struggle against Hitler, he simply had his opinion regarding Jews.”
