A Box Office and Critical Juggernaut
Released in the summer of 2023, the Barbie movie quickly became a cultural phenomenon and a box office juggernaut. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film’s global theatrical run ended with a worldwide gross of over $1.445 billion, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023. The movie’s success was also driven by the “Barbenheimer” trend, a marketing phenomenon where audiences saw both Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer on the same day.
The film was highly acclaimed, earning numerous awards and nominations. The movie received eight nominations at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, and Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera. It ultimately took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. The song “I’m Just Ken,” performed by Ryan Gosling, also received an Academy Award nomination.
Cultural Legacy and a New Animated Movie
Beyond its box office success, the Barbie movie has had a lasting cultural impact, sparking widespread conversations about gender, identity, and societal expectations. The film’s feminist themes and critiques of the patriarchy have been the subject of extensive academic and public discourse, with many praising the movie for its nuanced approach to these topics. However, some have critiqued the film’s Western-centric narrative and its limited resonance with non-Western audiences. The movie has also been credited with inspiring a new wave of film production from Mattel, which now has plans to adapt nearly 20 more of its toy properties for the big screen.
Following the massive success of the live-action film, a new animated Barbie movie is officially in the works. The film will be a collaboration between Mattel and Illumination, the studio behind the Minions and Super Mario Bros. franchises. The new animated film is in the early stages of development and is not expected to be released until after 2026. There is no confirmation yet on whether it will have a connection to Greta Gerwig’s 2023 blockbuster, and there are no current plans for Gerwig to be involved.
