Actress and environmental activist Dia Mirza has called on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to reduce pollution and guarantee “clean air” for Mumbai residents.

In a meeting with Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar on Monday, Mirza presented a 10-year action plan to lower health risks along with Sumaira Abdulali (Awaaz Foundation), Hema Ramani (BEAG), Shruti Panchal, and Rasika Nachankar (Vatavaran Foundation). made recommendations. from the city’s extensive air pollution.

He spoke about solid waste management, construction and demolition waste, and the need for an institutional framework to address air pollution at the local level in the nation’s commercial capital as part of the Clean Air Mumbai (CAM) network.

The action plan calls for boosting the use of sustainable energy sources, lowering automobile emissions, and promoting public transportation since “clean air is a basic human right and prompt collective action is essential to defend it.” A response is necessary.

Also, the CAM group promoted partnerships with urban local government entities, research institutions including the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute and the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, builders’ groups, and civil society organizations.

“The detrimental impacts of air pollution on public health are readily apparent… and are to blame for the rise in heart problems and respiratory illnesses. According to reports, air pollution hinders children’s brain development and even contributes to cancer, said Mirza.

Ward-based committees, enforcement of laws and environmental standards during building, and a grievance process that is friendly to citizens, according to Abdulali, are all urgently needed.

The level of particle matter (PM) in Mumbai has reportedly reached an all-time high, and Mirza claimed that more pollutants are contaminating the air that our elderly and young people are breathing.

Ramani claimed that the BMC was open to recommendations addressing the requirement for enhancing the administrative system’s capabilities as well as raising public consciousness. As stated in the most recent Budget 2023–2024, the BMC intends to work with citizen organizations to plan campaigns against air pollution, tree cutting, garbage management, noise pollution, etc.

The CAM member expressed optimism that the municipal organization and residents might work together to develop a roadmap for a clean and healthy Mumbai and enhance the standard of the air that people breathe.

BMC has recently implemented severe steps to minimize pollution at different levels and has implemented multiple measures in this regard, which are anticipated to shortly bear fruit.
