Catherine Corsini’s “Le Retour” is also one of the late additions to the lineup.
The 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 16 to 27, has added a number of new films to its already highly anticipated official selection, including Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “Black Flies,” which stars Sean Penn and is in competition; Catherine Corsini’s “Le Retour,” which breaks the competition competition record with a total of seven female directors; Amat Escalante’s Mexican drama “Perdidos en la noche;” and Lisandro Alonso’s suspense
Prior to this, Alonso and Mortensen worked together on the 2014 film “Jauja,” which had its world premiere at the festival’s Un Certain Regard and earned the FIPRESCI Prize, its highest honor. “Eureka” and “Perdidos en la Noche” would screen in the Cannes Premiere section without any competition.
The recently revealed additions join previously revealed buzzy out-of-competition films, such as Saoirse Ronan’s “The Killers of the Flower Moon,” Martin Scorsese’s “The Killers of the Flower Moon,” Mayhaven’s festival opener “Jean du Barry,” which is controversial due to its star Johnny Depp and a possible assault lawsuit against the director, and Saoirse Ronan’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
New movies by Wes Anderson, Jonathan Glazer, Todd Haynes, Aki Kaurismaki, Jessica Hausner, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nanni Moretti, Alice Rohrwacher, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Catherine Breillat, Wim Wenders, and more are among the notable titles in the competition area. With the addition of today’s picture, the total number of films directed by women reached an all-time high in this year’s competition roster, which previously featured a record number of films by female filmmakers.
Ruben stlund, a two-time winner of the Palme d’Or, will preside over the jury for this year’s competition; however, no additional jury members have yet been revealed.
Quentin Tarantino will take part in the festivities as too, as was previously reported. He will give a hidden screening as part of the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar. That movie has not yet received an announcement.
